Harmonieplein Leeuwarden

This design is made in context of the manifestation ‘Kloppend Hart’. It’s an exploration how to connect public spaces inside as well outside. This complex, which houses different social facilities, reacts on the recognizable morphologic of this part of the city. On the one side the citytheatre with her stagetowers and at the other side the classicistic autonomous justice building.

The square now is a leftover of different time stages, this part hasn’t evolved jet. Intensifying of the plot and use of different functions, can be an impulse for the vitality of the city center. The initiative is based on the ambitions of the municipality Leeuwarden to make an improvement in the connection between Zaailand and the future Harmoniekwartier. In the building a central hall makes visual and spatial connections with public spaces all over the building.
The relationship between the effervescent interior and street live brings new élan. Next to the main entrance a Grand Café forms the passage to the citytheatre. This way a new connection is made with the parking garage Zaailand. Prominent in the hall the new city library will be located. This invites to work, study, read and stay. On top you’ll find a lecture-hall for 150 persons with a large terrace looking over the Ruiterskwartier. The hall is intended for conferences and party’s.
The volumes support the underlying functions and have their surprising windows overlooking the city. The building’s purpose is contributing to the dynamic ambition of the cultural quarter that reaches between the Friesian museum and the Harmonie.
