Kooi Makkum is a modern shipyard for exclusive yachts. They build custom sail yachts out off aluminum with wooden finishing. The former building wasn’t representative.
A part of the booth stayed intact. The office has been transformed completely and on the first floor a meeting room is added with a nice view over the national park. We have got rid of the whole office façade and inserted a new volume in the existing volume.
An open workspace adds flexibility for the future and brings daylight further into the building. A large shed roof marks the entry and blocks direct sunlight. The result is a clear transparent interior. Every employee can easily make contact. Visitors are welcomed in a light open space.
We used materials which are typical for Kooi, aluminum and wood. Wood is used for the finishing details in the interior, the aluminum forms the façade with a composition of open en closed blinds. The wooden floor inside continues also outside like a landing stage and forms a square. Wooden cabinets divide the workplaces. The cabinets stick trough the façade, this way the inside function is visible from outside. A nice human measurement is felt. The aluminum panels also run in front of the old façade for a balanced image. In front of the old façade the material runs in front of the old windows and function as movable blinds.
