In Fryslân at the edge of a little village Hieslum five farmhouses are clustered. One of them no longer functions as a farm. The large barn looses its function and can be replaced with an other function.
A multi-annual plan is made. The residence can grow in the years within the walls of the barn. The first part is the kitchen in the south-westcorner. It is connected with the garden en orientated towards the sun, with a view over the ‘Aldegeaster Brekken’, the lake-area south-east of the village.
The new volume is planned between the columns and the outer wall. The old columns will be visible in the new part. The smaller beams will also be visible and create the main shape of the volume. This corner of the farm is partly opened, it brings more light and sight into the volume. The corner also adds a new space ouside between barn and yard, which is partly covered. By removing the roof but leaving only the beams visible. This way the contour of the roof will maintain.
The cut that is completely covered with lorch. The ceiling of the kitchen is partly covered with glass; this way the beautiful barn-construction maintains visible.
