In cooperation with Olthaar Projecten in Nijmegen we transformed an old theatre in Benghazie, Libia. With behold of the historic structure we designed a modern theatre. The theatre is rebuilt with local contractors. The old framework is used as basis for a hypermodern theatre with West-European standards for sound, lighting, acoustics and climate control. New rooms en logistics were rearranged.
Central in the building is the main room, with the supporting functions like dressing rooms, bathrooms, depot. The entrance is orientated on the important route from city center to the harbor of Benghazie. The interior is designed with respect for the local culture. A local architect was involved to make the right design choices.
AchterboschZantman was involved from design to construction. In continuance of this theater we made a structure-design for a second theatre in a cite nearby. Due to the ‘Arabic spring’ in 2009 we couldn’t finish the project.
