In the quarter De Bouwen, Drachten, we initiated and partly commissioned by Woonfriesland a new project at the former garage location. The project contains 3 dwellings and 21 apartments with a view over the park and parking places. The basis of the plan is the masterplan of the quarter ‘De Bouwen’. The project will be the first of three similar volumes next to eachother at De Bouwakker. According the masterplan the first plan is realized and the other two will follow.
Trough its simplicity and casualness the project fits in well in the existing structure. The corner solution is chosen to mirror the third block on the other side. The center block has a identical ending of the blnock as the other two. This way the blocks form a formal façade towards the park with accents on the corners.
We translated the Masterplan to the transition of private and public. Not only on street level also the upper levels make contact with the surrounding area. Dwellings have their front door towards the square, this brings quality. It makes the square less anonymous and more lively. The apartments on top have a large sliding window towards the park.
The design of the backside of the apartments is carefully chosen. It brings quality in the back area. The image is quiet and clean. Chosen is to use the typical Dutch see-through plan, to make an orientation towards the park and the sunny side at the back. At the back we find the gallery with wide balconies and walkway. The balconies are large and bring a nice quality for the apartments and its surroundings. The balconies are lifted above the parked cars for the best view.
The front facade is horizontally divided to emphasize the collective character, without loosing the individuality of each apartment. The dwellings have vertical elements that strengthen the individuality. The basement of the apartments has the same vertical aspects, this way the dwellings and the apartment block are related.
